Chaos Deconstruction: Sightlines

(Eingestellt am 11. Juni 2023, 00:07 Uhr von KNT)

This is a Chaos Deconstruction with sightline clues. In short, when the arrows are in a region, they function just as they would in some puzzles you may have solved before, but outside regions the clues all act as pointers to empty cells.

------

Rules:

Chaos Deconstruction:

  • In the grid, some 9-cell regions containing the digits 1-9 must be located. Digits cannot repeat in any row, column or region, and regions are orthogonally connected. Regions may touch each other orthogonally, and the number of regions to be located is not given. Digits may not be placed outside regions.

  • If a cell with an arrow(s) is nonempty, the digit placed in that cell indicates the number of cells seen in the indicated directions combined (including itself). Region borders and empty cells obstruct vision.

  • If a cell with an arrow(s) is empty, there must be at least one empty cell in the direction of each arrow in that cell.

Clarification: An empty cell is defined as any cell without a digit.

------

Below is a sample puzzle (with size 6 regions) and its solution to demonstrate the ruleset. It can be played here.

The main puzzle can be played on either SudokuPad or Penpa+.

I have not provided answer check due to an exploit with the SudokuPad software allowing solvers to locate empty cells without solving the puzzle. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Lösungscode: Row 11, Column 4, X for empty cell.

Great puzzle - really fun to solve - despite messing up by misreading the arrows a couple of times, didn't ever feel like this was super difficult.

Not a fan of deconstruction, but fan of Chaos. Thanks for this amazing puzzle.

What a beautiful and magnificent puzzle again from @KNT. I’m so pleased to have solved it without erring even once on the extremely smooth solve path. It was very tough for me but never despairing. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Awesome puzzle. The incorporation of blank cells really messed with my brain and disrupted the logic that I thought I'd learned in Ariadne and Oenopion. I broke this puzzle 3 times but persevered!

Great puzzle. Thank you!

@washyleopard: At first glance that might seem true, but upon a closer look at the grid (and example puzzle) you should realize an empty grid does not satisfy all the rules.

If you take a liberal definition of "some" in the first rule to also include 0, then the blank grid is technically a correct solution to this puzzle.

@KNT you're right, I thought of that before even starting the puzzle, this is how you are meant to break in I suppose.

Superb ! Fell into all the little traps I could find on my way, just to make the entertainment last a bit longer ;) Thanks !

Loads of fun, not too difficult, unique, what is not to like?

In Pfiffigkeit nicht mehr zu übertreffen!

Fantastic puzzle! This feels like a substantial improvement of an already very good ruleset. There was a point in the solve where basically all the digits got resolved at once, that was the icing on the cake.

Extremely fun puzzle, very smooth. This was definitly one of my favourites of yours.

Very clever puzzle, also one of my favorites of yours!

@MaizeGator: No, they need not be orthogonally adjacent. For example, examine R6C5 in the sample puzzle: there must be at least one empty cell to its left, and at least one empty cell above it. The empty cell to its left is satisfied by R6C1, and any of R[1-4]C5 could satisfy as the target empty cell above the clue.

Quick rule clarification: The minimum one empty cell that an arrow in an empty cell references does not necessarily need to be orthogonally adjacent? This seems obvious from the example puzzle, but it isn't clear to me in the instructions.

I absolutely loved this puzzle. A really nice variety of interesting and challenging region geometry logic, with very smooth irregular sudoku at the end. One of my favorite puzzles of yours :)
