Siamese Coral (1)

(Eingestellt am 6. März 2023, 02:36 Uhr von KNT)

A researcher recently discovered a new mutation of coral, look! It seems two coral are somehow conjoined together? As standard for coral, each individual coral is connected, contains no 2x2 area, and does not touch itself- even diagonally, sort of like a branching snake. It must also be noted that no cell is occupied by both corals, and some cells might not be reached by either coral. As you can see, there are coral hints to the right and bottom which indicate the lengths of connected segments in increasing order. However, it is unclear as to which coral each set of hints refer to... what a disaster!

But, we can differentiate between the two corals, as every cell on one coral contains a digit from 1 to 9, and, thankfully, without any repeats in rows or columns. On the other hand, every cell on the other coral may not contain a digit (obviously, on cells occupied by neither coral, there also are no digits, but you already knew this). I provided some clues above and to the left of the grid, which are almost standard Japanese Sum clues. The clues indicate sums of connected digits on the coral, but similar to the coral hints, the Japanese Sum hints are also listed in ascending order, not order of occurrence. Understand? Good. I have prepared a small 10x10 grid to prepare you for what's soon to come. It seems a monster siamese coral is creeping up to us...

You still don't understand? Fine, here is a diagram where the filled coral may only use digits from 1 to 5. You should have no more questions after examining this comically miniature coral.

Lösungscode: Row 3, Column 9: K for empty coral, X for neither coral, otherwise the digit

Very enjoyable "training" puzzle ! Now let's see what we can do with that giant invading siamese coral...

Beautiful construction! Challenging, but all the steps are clear and logical, absolutely no trial and error needed.
Love it and will now see if I can tackle that monster...

Turns out that remembering all the rules definitely helps a solve progress faster. That being said, this is far out of my comfort zone so i certainly feel the 5/5 difficulty is warranted. It kept me engrossed though!

@AnnaTh Thank you for the lovely compliment :) I am personally very surprised this puzzle ended up as 5 stars, I listed it (and still think) it is a 4. However the follow up is surely much more challenging. Sometimes I wish for more possible ratings for difficulty..

Awesome puzzle, that was a ton of fun. Thanks for including an example so I didn't have to parse every detail in the story :)

Fascinating ruleset! I found this 'intro'-puzzle already quite challenging, so I suspect the monster one will put up a good fight :)

Very fun puzzle! I see a lot of potential for this ruleset on a bigger grid :)
