Japanese Sum Cave Cipher #13: Alien

(Eingestellt am 21. Februar 2023, 04:18 Uhr von KNT)

Rules:

Japanese Sum Cave: Place numbers from 1-9 in some cells and blacken all other cells such that no number repeats in a row or column. Further, the numbers form a cave: they are all connected and all blackened cells have a connection through other blackened cells to an edge of the grid. Clues outside the grid give the sums of connected digits in the correct order. Same letters replace same digits, different letters replace different digits. No clue may have a leading 0.

The construction of this puzzle was assisted by three aliens, each of which is familiar with only one number base - which might not be our usual 10. However, you forget the bases these aliens are familiar with, or which alien wrote which clue! Thankfully the puzzle is still solvable.

------

Below is an example (with digits 1 to 7) that was created with the help with two aliens. One of these aliens is familiar with base 4, and in the solution image, those hints have been written in blue. The other alien is familiar with base 11, and in the solution image, those hints have been written in red. 1, 2, and 3 could have been written by either alien, so no color coding is provided for those hints. Also note that F replaces the "digit" 10, as 10 is a digit in base 11.

The main puzzle with three aliens follows:

Fantastic puzzle, filled with beautiful and rewarding deductions until the end! The alien bases make it a lot more challenging but it was well worth it.

A true masterpiece!

The concept of having ciphered clues in three different unknown bases sounds like it would be impossible to solve but surprisingly this ended up a bit easier than expected. Still a very challenging puzzle, and great fun to solve as always.

Wow, what a puzzle. Extremely satisfying to figure out the bases and use them. I've been very impressed with this series of puzzles, and how you've managed to knock it out of the park 13 times.

As polar said, it's getting harder and harder to find creative comments about these puzzles :)

For anyone interested in this puzzle but perhaps a bit intimidated by the idea of clues in alternate number bases, I recommend first solving the “Extraterrestrial Japanese Sums” puzzle I posted as it would likely serve as good practice.

Wonderfully crafted, this was my first Alien puzzle and I thoroughly enjoyed the logic around different bases.
