Japanese Sum Nurikabe #1 (11x11)

(Eingestellt am 4. September 2022, 05:44 Uhr von KNT)

My largest puzzle to date is coming relatively soon, and it is with this exact same ruleset. It is on a 16x16 grid, and admittedly very daunting, so I thought I would first create an 11x11 version to hopefully get solvers acquainted more and perhaps give some of you confidence to take on the bigger one. I hope you try the big one when I publish it too! I have left a solution video explaining my solve path in the hidden comments.

Rules:
  • Blacken some cells such that all blackened cells are orthogonally connected, and contain no 2x2 blocks.
  • Place a digit from 1-8 in every cell that is not blackened such that no digit repeats in any row or column. A row or column of the grid does not necessarily need to contain every digit from 1-8. Blackened cells may not contain digits.
  • Groups of orthogonally connected cells with digits form islands, which do not touch orthogonally, but may touch diagonally. On an island, digits may not repeat, and every island must contain the digit which is its size.
  • Outside the grid are Japanese Sums clues, which indicate the sums of consecutive filled cells in the respective row or column. Each distinct Japanese Sum clue is separated by at least one blackened cell. For any row or column, either all or no clues are provided.
  • Whenever it appears inside or outside the grid, a "?" represents a single digit number, and a "??" represents a double digit number. A double digit number cannot begin with 0.
  • Outside the grid, "..." denotes an arbitrary number of Japanese Sum clues. This could be zero, one, or multiple.
  • Inside the grid are some clued cells. These cells are all blackened, and the number of values within a clued cell indicates the number of distinct islands that touch the 8 cells that surround the clued cell. Each value within a clue cell corresponds to the sum of all the digits on one of the islands that directly surround the clued cell. No two values within a clued cell indicate the sum of the same island (i.e. each clue is distinct).
The puzzle can be played here.

Below is an example on the numbers 1 through 5 to demonstrate the rules.

Lösungscode: Row 6, Column 1, with X for empty cells (22 characters total)

109 minutes.
...However, after I read the rules carefully, I realized that this puzzle only requires filling in 1-8, not 1-9...
In other words, before I discovered this, I had already wasted about 1/4 of my time...

Wild that it took Xendari 45 minutes to see that only digits 1-8 are used... that particular deduction took me two hours.

Other than that, a very nice puzzle!

Great fun! Luckily I read some comments and remember to have the correct set of digits in mind. :D

lovely puzzle! I found it a little easier 45 minutes in when I realised it was only 1-8 lmao :/

Really nice!
I got almost all blackened cells and some numbers quite fast, but then no progress for 2 hours because i skipped the part with "place a digit from 1-8" over and over again. It was such a relief to eliminate the 9s :D

Very nice combination ! Once I understood the rules correctly (Thanks @polar for the answer to my question), it felt very natural and pleasing to juggle with the variety of clues. Question marks and three little dots are just insanely enjoyable clues !

@Christounet yes that's right. It can represent no clues (so just shaded cells), one clue (either ? or ??) or several clues (some combination of ? & ??).

Wow! What a brilliant puzzle! Quite challenging, but I enjoyed every single step. KNT, you have become one of my favourite puzzle authors!
