Medieval Upheaval

(Eingestellt am 2. Juli 2022, 08:00 Uhr von Nordy)

After learning many lessons about setting over the past few weeks, I have finally constructed a Chess Sums Chaos Construction with a smooth solve path (you can find the previous monsters here and here). In this newest version, I have simplified the rules by removing the Rooks and double clues, and I have also provided some given digits! (For any setters still allergic to given digits like I was, I recommend visiting a doctor :P). Thanks again to @henrypijames for the name inspiration. Enjoy!

Rules:

Chaos Construction: Place the digits 1 to 9 in every row, column, and irregular region. Each region is a set of nine orthogonally connected cells that must be determined.

Squares—King Sums: Digits in cells with squares are the sum of all digits that share its region and are a king's move away.

Circles—Knight Sums: Digits in cells with circles are the sum of all digits that share its region and are a knight's move away.

Not all squares or circles are necessarily given (no negative constraint).

Example: Below is an example region with valid square and circle clues. The squared 6 sees 4+2 by king's move. The circled 8 sees 3+5 by knight's move.

Solve Online:

  • CTC (disable conflicts)
  • F-Puzzles (disable conflicts)
  • Penpa+ (answer check on blue Sudoku and green edges)

Lösungscode: Row 8 (left to right) with dashes for region borders (example: 35-2187-96-4)

Though but always fair. Loved the interactions. I can't believe you continue to create those beautiful things. Thank you Nordy.

Somehow, i found this tougher than Medieval Upheaval 2. Got thru on the second attempt. Good fun. Thanks, @ Nordy :)

Awesome, thanks! Indeed, very smooth, especially compared to the earlier puzzles :)

Very nice ! I have never tried the previous iterations with that ruleset, but this one was really cool and just hard enough. Loved the way the first region popped out of nowhere very quick in the beginning.

This solve path was silky smooth compared to the previous 'introduction' - congrats on such a great improvement! Lovely balance between required deductions and rewarding the solver at the same time.
P.S. Thanks for the heads up on this :)

haha, good that you were able to overcome your givenphobia, since the givens are used wonderfully!

Very cool puzzle! The chess sum constraint is pulling a lot more Wright than I thought at first.
