Constellation Sudoku VI: Gemini

(Eingestellt am 29. Mai 2022, 08:00 Uhr von Jreg)

This is a continuation of my previously published idea, Constellation Sudoku - with an added custom constellation rule. This puzzle is based around an existing constellation called Gemini, also one of the astrological signs.

This was the hardest Sudoku for me to set so far. As soon as I introduced two separate sets of constellations, each with its own set of arrows, the puzzle got overwhelmed with numbers very quickly. It took a few days of work to figure out a pattern that solves uniquely (or solves at all, rather) while still resembling the original constellation.

If you like this idea and the puzzle I created using it, I would love to see more people take this concept and construct their own puzzles with it! I think it has a cool potential, but I'm not a good enough setter to do it justice. Let me know what you think and have at it!

The rules are as follows:

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

The constellation is split into two halves*; the point of division is column 5. In each half, every star (the turqoise circles) must contain a different digit. The one star in column 5 is shared between the respective halves of the constellation, therefore both halves contain a total of nine stars.

Digits along arrows must sum to the total given in the connected circle. Some stars (where the stacked arrow tips resemble diagonally placed crosses) are a common starting point for multiple arrows.

*Canonically, the Gemini constellation is divided between two twin half-brothers, Pollux and Castor. If you're wondering how it's possible for literal twins to have a different parent, it turns out ancient Greek mythology is wild.

This is an absolutely beautiful puzzle, and while there’s definitely one pretty tricky part, I still think it 'looks' more intimidating that it actually is. I hope more people will try it!
