Spelunker (Killer Cave + Whisper Hybrid)

(Eingestellt am 19. Mai 2022, 08:53 Uhr von KNT)

Abed hawila's Killer Cave + Region Sum line puzzle is one of the best puzzles I have solved in recent memory, so I knew I had to experiment with cave variants. To anyone that has not yet solved that puzzle, I strongly recommend you do so! (after solving mine, of course)

The rules to this puzzle may seem complicated, but just read them carefully and it will all make sense.

Rules:

1) Normal Sudoku rules apply.

2) Grey squares are walls and green squares are cave. Some of the cells must be colored grey so that all grey cells (the walls) are orthogonally connected to the edge and all other (green) cells form an orthogonally connected area (the cave). Grey cells may not have 2x2 blocks.

3) A number in the top left corner of a cell indicates the sum of the digits that are seen from this cell looking to the north, south, east, and west. The cell with the clue counts once in this sum. Walls obstruct the view. A cell with a clue must be part of the cave. Within the field of vision of a clue, digits may not repeat.

4) In addition, Grey walls act as whisper lines: any two adjacent wall cells must have values that differ by at least 5. Isolated wall cells are not bound to any constraint.

Here is a 6x6 example puzzle to illustrate the rules. For the sake of practicality for a 6x6 puzzle, the whisper lines here are bound to a ≥3 constraint as opposed to ≥5.

This is definitely one of my favorite sets to date, and I hope you enjoy it too! Both my tester and I agreed this puzzle is somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, but probably closer to 4 if you are more familiar with cave logic. The puzzle:

Brilliant puzzle, thanks. Some lovely logic arising from the GW constraint. I got horribly snarled up at one point because I forgot a bit of wall was already connected to the edge, and was trying to do it again.

Very nice! I always love a good cave puzzle, and this one was great with some elegant whisper logic adding a twist.

Thanks, Magnus! I am glad I am able to bring fresh things to the table for a veteran solver like yourself.

Very nice combination of rules, which offers a great sequel to Abed Hawila's cave puzzle. Something familiar, yet a good feeling of novelty. Also, what a beautiful ending with that slight change in the solving process ! Thanks !!

----

I am glad I managed to capture that familiar feeling, but present it in a novel way.

Great puzzle! This is a cool variation of cave sudoku. It wasn't easy, but the deductions were rewarding and fair. I liked how the walls got resolved at the end.

Thanks, Agent!

Woo hoo, my first Cave Puzzle, that was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the combination of rule types, I did get bogged down a few times until I remembered one of them.

Awesome puzzle, hope Simon ends up doing a video on this, thanks so much <3

thank you for the kind words!
