Chaos Construction: Impressionist

(Eingestellt am 15. Mai 2022, 17:41 Uhr von KNT)

It's the weekend, so I thought I'd post a second puzzle that I've had completed for a while. I know the Suguru I posted yesterday isn't everyone's cup of tea (and frankly, it isn't mine either), but this puzzle is much more up my alley, and is hopefully somewhat accessible. I think you'll enjoy this one a lot. Expected difficulty between 4 and 5.

The rules for this one may seem a little complicated, but they're more unusual than a difficult set of criteria to keep track of. In my opinion, once you internalize them, they become very natural, and I think many more puzzles with a wide variety of logic could be made with this same ruleset.

1) Normal Chaos Construction rules apply. Place one of each digit 1-9 in every row, column, and region, but the regions must be determined by the solver. That is, divide the grid into 9 orthogonally connected groups of 9 cells.

2) There are three properties: Red, Yellow, and Blue.

The Red property indicates the number of cells in the same region as the cell in the surrounding 3x3 area.

The Yellow property indicates the number of cells NOT in the same region as the cell in the surrounding 3x3 area.

The Blue property indicates the number of distinct regions in the surrounding 3x3 area.

3) A cell with a colored circle in it indicates that cell satisfies ONLY the properties of the colors required to create the color of the cell. For example, a cell with a red circle satisfies red, but NOT yellow or blue. A cell with a green circle satisfies both yellow and blue, but NOT red. A cell with a white circle satisfies all three colors.

4) Not all circles are necessarily given.

Here is a 6x6 example puzzle to illustrate the rules. If you give this a try, you can realize how particular arrangements of these circled cells can be surprisingly forcing.

Lösungscode: Row 3 followed by Column 7

Very nice ! The hardest part for me was not mixing the color of the circles and the regions. Thanks :)

Very interesting ruleset. Regions building logic was exquisite (with some cool traps punishing for lack of attention), but I also liked that irregular sudoku part was quite challenging.

More Stuckist than Impressionist for me! Really tough and never felt I had mastered it until near the end when things came together. Very clever puzzle, thanks.

Very nice - as usual! ;-)

Very memorable original ruleset and a lovely solve. Criminally underrated puzzle in my opinion. Thanks! :)

Fun and original! Quite challenging for me, possibly five stars difficulty in my opinion.

Challenging! I was never completely sure of the deductions I made. Beautiful puzzle though!

Although a note, is there a way to put the circles such that the circle color doesn't change when we color the cells? It annoyed me to no end when I was coloring regions, that I had to sometimes uncolor just to remember which color the original circle was.
