Response from Eric: Some apparently have done it without coloring but I think coloring makes it easier. Coloring definitely made it easier to create the puzzle.

Thank you for a solvable and enjoyable puzzle for an absolute beginner like me. It had me thinking quite a lot and took me about an hour. I did take a wrong turn towards the end and I could solve the sudoku as I didn't follow a rule. But instead of throwing it away, I returned and found the error.
Thanks again for giving me a confidence boost
