Rules:

  • Regular sudoku rules apply.
  • All cells directly beneath a digit 1 shows the horizontal distance to the 1 in that row in either direction.
  • The same goes for cells beneat a 9. See example.

Very nice.

I agree with Richard that the name shouldn't be used twice. Why not 1-9-Offset? And the other type could also get another name. Then offset sudoku would be the subclass and all future variations could get ...-Offset-... as name. I think there are some more possibilities.

BTW, offset isn't restricted to Sudoku. All latin squares (skyscrapers, kropki etc.) could be combined with offset rules.

Not to be nitpicking, but the name offset is already attached to another sudoku variant.

Edit: I realise it is not easy to come with a new name when there are already hundreds of variants...

Reply: Hi Richard! Sorry, didn't notice your comment until now. You're right that the name has been used already, but as you also say, it's almost impossible to find a good new name. The dictionary definition of "offset" is "the amount or distance by which something is out of line", so I feel it fits the constraint I'm using extremely well.
