This is my first puzzle using the hunter cage contraint; the follow up to the psycho killer constraint.

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • There are cages in the grid, digits can not repeat within cages.
  • Black cages are normal killer cages, digits in these cages must sum to the value in the top left corner of the cage.
  • Brown cages are hunter cages. Digits placed in hunter cages point to that box in the grid, and the cell in the same position in that box. The digits in the top left corner of a hunter cage must be pointed to by the digits in the cage; digit order does not matter.

A rule that exists for hunter cages, but is not relevant for this puzzle.

  • Cages with more cells than given digits may point to any digits with the other cells.

I have gone through many drafts of the wording of these rules, and spoken to several people about them. This is the best we have so far, but are still working on finding improvements.

Rules Example

This is a solvable example.

In this the 22 cage in box 1 must have two cells pointing to two 2s. The 4 points to box 4, and the 2 is in the same cell location in that box; the 3 points to box 3 and the 2 is in the same location in that box. The 2 cage in row 4 must point to a 2 from one of the cells, the 3 points to a 2 in box 3 in the same cell location, and because there is one cell that points to a 2, the 4 can point to anything.

For people who are struggling to see the cages due to the colours, here are links to ones with cages marked more clearly.

Solve Video

Because this is a new ruleset I have created a solve video for this puzzle where I demonstrate how the ruleset works and show how I solve this puzzle to demonstrate the logic used.

Solve video on YouTube
The video is in English

People who do not want any help should just ignore the video. Though if you want to see me make a mistake with my own puzzle, this is a video where I do that; I do have the correct step detailed in the video description.

I felt like playing the first puzzle that used this constraint after seeing it used by ICHTUES. The puzzle was very fun to solve!

Fun constraint. One suggestion about the hunter cage description, albeit not absolutely necessary but it might prevent unwitting errors. “Hunter Cage digit clues provided are not indicative of order pointed at/to by completed puzzle” or something to that effect. While it isn’t important in the example, an “XYZ” hunter cage does not mean the cage points to an X then a Y and then a Z.
