Locked Out (Lockout Lines)

(Eingestellt am 17. August 2021, 14:05 Uhr von riffclown)

From the minds of riffclown and Tallcat , introducing Lockout lines.,
Lockout Lines- Endpoints (Diamonds) must differ by at least 4 and digits on the line must fall outside the endpoint values (cannot be equal to).
When endpoints are shared, each Lockout segment is treated as an independent Lockout Line.
Digits can repeat on lines if allowed by other rules.
This is the first introductory puzzle and is provided merely to familiarize with the new ruleset.

Thanks for the gentle introduction. I hope to see more puzzles that use these

As others have mentioned - the new constraint could be better worded; but a lovely idea

Great to see this on here! I hope everyone who's solved this so far enjoys the harder ones that are coming >:D

@riffclown ah okay I see what you mean. Nice hybrid! Glad you brought that up.

@djorr Thank you for the kind comments. We honestly considered a lot of factors in creating this constraint. Anti-between was an initial thought but setting the endpoint differences brings a lot of Whisper logic into the mix and the difference of 4 actually strikes the perfect balance. Those that are thinking of these as just anti-between lines and nothing more are in for a huge surprise soon.

Well done to both of you! To reiterate some thoughts below... I don't understand the "diamonds must differ by at least 4" rule. Similar to how between lines can have 1 and 9 in the circles and it gives no info on the lines, lock out lines should be allowed to have consecutive numbers on the diamonds. I think it would be a better ruleset, just in my opinion. Really nice puzzle, thanks for posting it :)

Can't wait to see more of these!

I agree with the other comments that this is a really fun constraint but the wording is a little awkward. I would phrase it as "Digits on on the line cannot be the same as or fall between the digits on the end points".

I'm also curious about the "endpoints must differ by 4" rule. I think mixing this up could make things really interesting. For example, "digits on the end points must differ by more than N, where N is to be deduced" or "digits on the end points must differ by exactly 2".

Actually, now that I think about it, making the constraint "endpoints must differ by no more than X" really opens things up in a way that "must differ by at least X" does not.

Wording could be better
Essentially those lines are anti between lines
Was fun though

A cool ruleset that can create so many potential interesting things, thank you :)

What a fun new ruleset! Looking forward to more puzzles using this.

This is cool, being on-board with the first of a new category. Maybe someday there'll be a CTT Lockout Lines app. It is a logical development and I can see lots of possibilities.

@DiMono Great wording suggestion.. This is indeed only the trainer. To my knowledge, there are at least 10 puzzles by multiple Authors right now. Literally Expect more to come soon. I'll post the second training one on Thursday.

What fun to be here at the start of a new variant! Definitely fun having to stretch the mind to think in a new way. Interesting to see what this breeds!

So it's basically the opposite of a Between Line. I haven't done enough of those puzzles to give proper feedback... When you have the end digits, it's very easy to fill in the inner digits. But I found working backwards (having the inner digits and finding the endpoints) to be much harder to think about. But that might be the point.
Always interested in new variants, hope you come up with something interesting with it!

The wording of the constraint is a little awkward. You say digits on the line must fall outside the endpoint values, but then in brackets you say they cannot be equal to the endpoints, which looks like a clarification rather than an additional restriction. I would use something like:

Digits on the line must be different than the endpoint values and must not fall between them.

Once I deduced how to use the constraint I did enjoy the puzzle.

Love the new constraint. Great puzzle.
