7x7 Chaos Constructions: X-Sums

1. Divide the grid into seven regions, each containing seven cells. These regions must be orthogonally connected.
2. Each row, column and region contains the digits 1 to 7.
3. A clue outside the grid indicates that the first X cells in the row/column from that direction are in the same region, where X is the digit in the first cell from that direction. Moreover, the next cell (the (X+1)th cell) is part of a different region.
4. A numerical clue is the sum of the digits in those X cells. If the sum is not given, it is indicated by a question mark (?). Not all outside clues are necessarily given.
Below is a 5x5 example puzzle. You can try it on Penpa+.
Lösungscode: Enter the 5th column of the first puzzle and the 5th row of the second puzzle.
For each boundary edge within the row/column, enter the capital letter I.
For example, the second row in the 5x5 example is 2I5I431 whilst the third column is 1I4I52I3.

I solved these yesterday and accidentally lost my solution before entering it. So I solved them again today. I have to tell you, it was really fun both times! Thanks for the puzzles.

@Jesper: That's great news! I haven't really spent time thinking about a 9x9 yet. My next puzzle will not be a chaos construction, so do post it whenever you feel it is ready to upload. I look forward to trying it! :-)

@SudokuExplorer: I got a bit inspired after solving your puzzles on Tuesday and spontaneously set a 9x9 with this ruleset. I really just wanted to play around with some ideas, but then I got carried away and ended up setting a complete puzzle. I am considering to post it on Logic Masters at some point, but in case you are going to post a 9x9, I will definitely wait until you are done. I don't want to 'hijack' your series or anything :-)

That was excellent. I love this series of puzzles. The ruleset, combined with this grid size, makes for a puzzle that is both approachable, and replete with wonderful logic. Truly superb setting.

I agree with other comments; these are quite fun! Though entering the solution codes is a little tough; I like the idea of including the I, but I worry each time that I'm going to misplace one and have a hard time spotting where in a code of 30+ characters.

While the first puzzle is a easy start, the second one requires more thinking and deductions than I thought but still a very nice one indeed.

Thanks a lot Playmaker6174! The main focus when setting them was finding which location of a clue will form a decent restriction on the regions. It took a while to make them unique, but it was a rewarding process :-)

One tip whilst entering the solution code is to add spaces between each row/column. Note that spaces automatically get removed during the submission process.
