Great puzzle, with very confusing ruleset. For the benefit of future solvers, here is a rephrasing of the rules:
- place starts on some white cells. Stars cannot be placed on black cells.
- Each Row and Column should have exactly 3 stars.
- Stars cannot touch one another orthogonally or diagonally.
- Sandwichness for white cells: at least one of the following conditions must hold for each white cell: (i) it's a star, (ii) when looking right and left, it sees at least one star on each side, (iii) when looking up and down, it sees at least one star on each side. IMPORTANTLY, black cells block visibility.
- Negative sandwichness: black cells are NOT sandwiched, i.e. for each black cell, it either sees no stars above it or it sees no stars below it. And also, for each black cell, it either sees no stars to the left of it, or it sees no stars to the right of it.

@jessica6 Correct, no stars on the Grey cells.
Sorry for any ambiguity, maybe there is better way to word the negative constraint.

Really interesting ruleset and lovely example puzzle. Never too long between bouts of progress and figuring out how to identify where I should be looking next was a novel and interesting experience. Hope to see more of these!

I‘ve not seen this ruleset, but some years ago turkish paper magazines had a type they called Battlestar. It was Starbattle without regions and some cells where removed (preferably at the border so you dont get holes.) Turns out you dont have to remove many to get a unique solution. There are not that many solutions for 9x9 and 10x10 even before considering regions.
