Rules
  • Standard sudoku rules apply
  • Numbers to the left and right of the grid equal the total number of "I"s found in the Roman numeral representation of the first N digits in its corresponding row, where N is the first digit in that row on the side nearest the clue.
  • Numbers above and below the grid equal the total number of "V"s found in the Roman numeral representation of the first N digits in its corresponding column, where N is the first digit in that column nearest the clue.

The version I first posted had a step that I realized was too convoluted, but I was able to tweak one clue which changed two pairs of numbers in the final grid.

The deduction at that point is still a little tricky, but much easier to grok once you see it.
