Steinitz Sudoku #5 (Chess)

(Eingestellt am 12. Juni 2020, 11:54 Uhr von stefliew)

This is a new variant of Sudoku developed by Manus Hand and Stefan Liew. This puzzle is meant to be an introduction to this variant so it is meant to be easy. We hope you enjoy the puzzle.

1. Normal rules of Sudoku apply.
2. A chessboard is set on the Sudoku grid (with the top row and the right column outside the chessboard).
3. Chess pieces are shown on the board after a series of valid, legal moves have been played from the starting position of chess where White moves first followed by Black. The specific moves that have been made so far need to be figured out by the solver. The solver also needs to figure out whether it is White or Black's turn to move in the current position.
4. Only pieces that are captured are removed from the chessboard. Pieces that are not captured must be shown on the chessboard.
5. From the beginning of the chess game and throughout its course, every chess move meets the following restriction: The square that the moving piece lands on must contain a digit that is exactly one greater than the square that it moved from.
(If the square on which a chess piece stands contains an 8, then the square from which that piece came when it made its most recent move must contain a 7 and the square onto which it next moves must contain a 9.)

Wow. I thought I had the Chess part right, a couple times ... and the resulting sudoku, but kept making mistakes everywhere. But perseverance paid off and after only 5-6 hours, I solved it.

Thanks for the puzzle!

From Stefan: Thank you for solving the puzzle! I appreciate your feedback on how long it took you to solve the puzzle. It's not meant to be too difficult as not everything needs to be resolved at one go. I've posted the intended solution path in a hidden comment if you would like to see it.

I did way more guessing than I probably should have... It eventually worked, but probably should have tried to be more methodical. Definitely recommend the 'special knowledge' tag, as this would be impossible without knowledge of the game of chess. I would do more of them -- but I'm a chess nut. Can't wait to try one with castling -- I'm doubtful it's possible with the rules listed. Do you think you'll ever have the turns 'wrap around' from 9 to 1? Please don't... that would make it SO hard.

From Stefan: Hi! We actually have a sizeable number of puzzles, just that we want to make sure the solutions are unique and logical so we're still writing the solutions for them and solving them again at each step. A couple of the puzzles may or may not include castling!

;););) The label "suitable for beginners" is a nice joke addressed to this whole crowd of sudoku fans.

From Stefan: I've heard so much about LMG and the amazing solvers here that I honestly thought this would be considered suitable for beginners... Should I remove the tag?

From dm_litv: Surely, it's better to remove it.

You can try it at "www.deepl.com/translator".
Translations are not perfect, but more reliable than with most other software tools.

From Stefan: Thank you!
