Bizarro Killer

(Eingestellt am 12. Juni 2020, 05:38 Uhr von Strosahl)

Forget everything you think you know about Sudoku! I thought it would be fun to design a puzzle that didn't follow the normal rules.

8 digit sudoku, and the digits 1-8 are each used 8 times in the puzzle (like normal)
Number in the corner of a cage gives the sum of its digits (like normal killer sudoku)
However, normal sudoku rules DO NOT apply. Instead:
  • Every row, column, and box contains exactly 1 non-unique digit, and is missing exactly 1 digit.
  • Every number (1-8) is repeated in exactly 1 row, column, and box, and is missing in exactly 1 row, column, and box.
  • Every cage contains exactly 1 non-unique digit
  • Colored cells create additional cages that overlap normal cages (but they follow the same rules as the other cages)

Some examples for clarity:
  • a 12 cage could be 2,8,2 or 3,3,6, etc, but not 2,3,7 (must have a repeated digit) nor 4,4,4 (only 1 repeated digit allowed)
  • A row in the grid could be 1,4,2,3,5,6,3,8 (3 is repeated, 7 is missing)

This has been on my backlog for a while, so glad I finally did it! Incredible puzzle!

I also came across this via CTC's youtube comments.

Puzzle was very hard for me and provided a challenge until almost the end, because it requires us to think differently from the usual Sudoku rules.

Nonetheless I found it enjoyable enough, thanks to the setter for a great puzzle.

Came across this link while scrolling through the comments section of today's CTC "Sudoku Rules do not apply" video, posted by the creator himself! Great puzzle, was difficult for me, but managed to get it in the end! :)

@Joe Average Okay, cool. No problem. I totally understand that. I was just curious if there was something that turned people off about it that I should consider for future constructions. I certainly don't keep up with all the new puzzles being posted, so I get that.

I haven't touched this yet because of the sheer number of new puzzles being released right now. That's not to discourage you or anyone else from releasing new material, it's just that I can barely keep up with this release speed, and then some puzzles end up being left on the side for now, but I'll end up doing it later eventually. The basic premise seems interesting and requires new thinking, (definitely not bad at all) but seems like it'll require some time to wrap your head around.

Anyone have input as to why so few solves? Too hard? Too complicated? Just not interested?
I'm genuinely curious for any feedback. Thanks!
