Kings, Queens, and Princesses

(Eingestellt am 12. Juni 2020, 02:11 Uhr von cam)

The numbers in this puzzle have a constraint I call anti-princess
Rules:
Ordinary sudoku rules apply. In addition, the number in a box tells you the minimum diagonal distance between another of the same number. In the below example, I have marked the boxes that cannot be 3's in magenta. You'll notice that 1's have no additional constraint and 9's will act like queens. Every other number will behave like something inbetween.
Enjoy!
The puzzle:

Lösungscode: Row 5 followed by column 2

Genius setting! Its incredible how few digits were given (no 3s or 5s!), yet there was still a logical path.

@SudokuExplorer Wow! Thanks so much :) My brain damn near melted setting this so I'm really happy you enjoyed it!

I loved the Princesses series.

This one just got featured by Mark @CTC today so I assume it will draw more solvers and hopefully also more solvers for the Little Killer and the Thermo Princess.

@Cam and other setters passing by. Here is an idea for a mod I had: "Impostor Princess Court"
Rules same as Princess but there is an impostor: a digit that does not behave like it should and pretends to be another.

It could be simply that it does nothing. That is, having the equivalent of two 1's (potentially more challenging to solve) or that it copies another (more or less) exiting role for example 6 behaving like 9 having the effect of two sets of independent queens (as Realshaggy was saying below it gets restrictive quite fast). Again the key thing here is that you are not told who is the impostor. Food for thought.

Response:

I love that idea! However, I think I'm going to at least take a break from this variant. I would encourage you to try setting this puzzle for yourself though!

So this is the story of a princess whose dad died when she was 10. There was an attack from a hostile kingdom and the new king wanted to kill her. She escaped and lived as a peasant until she was 20 when she dressed in men’s clothes and pretended to be the long lost son of the king. The people believed her and reinstated her as the new king. But eventually she fell in love with a prince and reveled her true identity… The people did not like her deception so she had to run away when she was 30. A small group of loyalists followed her and she slowly started to build her kingdom. Every 10 years her influence grew until finally all the kingdom recognized her as the rightful queen for her 90th birthday. She ruled 10 prosperous years and died a centennial.

@glum_hippo Wow! What a great puzzle that was! Thanks for the suggestion and yes, I do see a similarity! Now I'm inspired to do something with this taxicab ruleset. That was a total blast.

Reminds me of MadMahogany's Manhattan Sudoku, but of course very different. Nice idea! Look forward to trying it.

OK no problem. I dont have the solution anymore, but there were still a lot, so it should be easy to find one again.

@rob It's an interesting question. Perhaps I'll play around with it and see. I much preferred the constraints as presented because I was put off by two of the digits (8 and 9) having the same constraint. On the other hand, if this isn't too restrictive, it could make for a very nice puzzle.

Very nice idea! Thanks..

@Realshaggy sorry about that. It was actually a complete accident

Why do you delete my comment? That wasnt a solution to this puzzle, just to the question that rob asked, if there are any solutions (in general) if you add 1 to the distance.
Because it is known, that all digits as queens doesnt work, so this can get restrictive quite fast.

Great idea and puzzle!

It was a bit confusing to me now and then because I'm more used to the similar constraint "plus 1", as in the Ripple Effect puzzle type. (So 1s couldn't touch diagonally, and both 8s and 9s would act as queens.) I wonder how that would work out, perhaps it's too restrictive?

What a great idea! And well executed too as this is challenging till the end. A real gem, Cam.

A while ago I had a similar idea but never put on paper, I'm glad someone did, very nice :)

Edit: I updated the explanation a little. Let me know if something still isn't clear :)
