This is a follow up puzzle I created based on the chess-themed puzzle I made earlier in the year. I've linked that puzzle below, I think having a go at that one first will definitely help you out with some of the initial logic in this puzzle but is definitely not required.
Also just an FYI, the 'chess' element of this puzzle is not super beginner friendly but should be doable if you have a good understanding of the fundamentals of chess and the concept of 'pins'.

Rules:
Normal 8×8 sudoku rules apply (fill each row, column, and box with the digits 1-8 once each).
Each circled cell contains a white chess piece standing on the matching square of a chessboard with white moving up the board. Additional black and white chess pieces may exist but their position must be deduced. The position of some additional chess pieces are given.
Each piece type (pawn, knight, bishop, rook, queen, king) is assigned a unique digit. The same digit is used for both colours and you must work out which digit represents which piece. Not every piece type has to appear.
The position is legal under the standard rules of chess, and you must be able to reach it by legal play. White and Black have identical material (the same number of each piece type). No pawn promotions have occurred. Black has just moved, and White is now in Stalemate, i.e. White is not in check and has no legal move.
A number outside the grid indicates the sum of the digits along the diagonal its arrow points along.
