Region Sum Lies

(Published on 9. October 2026, 01:52 by marty_sears)

Rules:

Normal sudoku rules apply.

LIAR CELLS: Every row, column and 3x3 box contains one liar cell, whose real value is different from its digit.

• Every liar cell contains a different digit from 1-9.
• Every liar cell has a different value from 1-9.

REGION SUM LINES: Box borders divide blue lines into segments. The values of cells on each segment have the same sum. This sum must be determined for each line.

BLACK DOTS: If a black dot sits between two cells, the value of one is double the value of the other.

NOTES: In each blue arrow, enter the liar digit for its row, and in the green circle to its right, write its real value.

Solution code: VALUES of cells in row 1, from left to right

Oof! This is yet again one of those "I can't believe it's not 5 stars" puzzles.
I've been staring at this for a few days before I got the break-in. Which didn't look very hard on hindsight. But about halfway I was completely stuck for ages before I found a way forward. And that definitely wasn't a 3 star step. So now I'm wondering whether I missed something easier. (Hopefully Simon will do this at some point so I can answer that question.)
That brought me all the way to the endgame, which was tricky but fair in a typical Marty way.
5 stars for me. At least.

That was exciting. I found the mid solve the most difficult but overall the difficulty is set about right.

Very nice puzzle ! I'm not used to those liar cells, so this was quite hard for me. But still really fun !

One of my favorites of this “liar” kind of genre. I found it a bit easier than the consensus, maybe because I’ve done a lot of these. The diagonal M inside that diagonal shape has me wondering if it’s supposed to represent anything.

Kept me thinking in the end about what was wrong until i found that the rows in the note cells are forced to the puzzle rows. Forgot the instruction says so. Brilliant setting thx.

Marty: I've now changed it so that filling out the notes is optional. Thanks for the feedback!

Very great puzzle, but I think it's better not to force filling note cells, use colouring is enough. Thanks anyway!

I think someone in the comments is happy to solve the puzzle first hahaha
Anyways fun puzzle with a simple ruleset, thank you Marty!

Woop woop!! First to solve a Mad Marty Monstrosity!! (Ok, a polite monstrosity)
Made my week!!

And it's such a beautiful puzzle. Really great flow. Lots of sweet logic, the puzzle itself guides you where to look, but throws gotchas at you every so often. Really hard puzzle-defining deduction in the middle of the solve (really, the middle deduction is the real break-in). Really really lovely. Thank you so much Marty for sharing this beauty! And even bigger thank you for everyone who are sleeping or at work, for giving me the opportunity to solve this first! <3
