The Forest of Modsters
(Published on 4. October 2026, 16:14 by morrisjb)
Rules:
- Normal sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1 through 9, such that every digit appears exactly once in each row, column, and box.
- Forests: A Forest is an orthogonally connected group of at least 2 cells. Each Forest is a different size, does not branch, and can’t touch other Forests except diagonally.
- Given Digits: A given digit can’t be in a Forest and counts the number of different Forests in its row and column combined. For example, row 3 column 1 is a 3 so there are 3 or more Forest cells in row 3 and column 1 that belong to exactly 3 different Forests.
- Trees: Cells separated by a green Tree symbol are in a Forest and their digits have a 1 to 2 ratio. Not all Trees have been given.
- Logs: Cells separated by a brown Log symbol may or may not be in a Forest, and their digits can never be consecutive. Not all Logs have been given.
- Modular lines: Each Forest acts as a modular line. Every set of 3 cells along the line must consist of a digit with remainder 1 (147), a digit with remainder 2 (258) and a digit with remainder 0 (369) when divided by 3. Digits in a two-cell Forest must have a different remainder. Digits in a Forest may repeat if allowed by other rules.

Loved it! A little tricky to find the right spot to get started, but very smooth after that. Fun solve, thank you for sharing!

After the rules click very fun and pretty approachable. I really liked the forest-building part and it flowed really well from there!

Glad you enjoyed it! I agree, the puzzle isn't as tricky as the rules might make it seem. -Morrisjb
