Am Holzweg

I've been enjoying Yajisan-Kazusan lately and decided to make a Sudoku hybrid with it. I already have an idea for a follow-up with sums instead of counts but wanted to see how this one is received first. According to testers (thanks everyone!) it should be around 3* for difficulty. I hope you enjoy!
Rules
Normal sudoku rules apply.
Shading: Shade some cells such that no two shaded cells share an edge and all unshaded cells form a single orthogonally connected area.
Circles: A digit in an unshaded circle counts the number of shaded cells in the indicated direction. (Shaded circles may or may not be lying.)
Fortress: A digit in a shaded cell is strictly larger than all its orthogonal neighbors.

Solution code: The shaded digits in row 4, left to right (up to 5 digits)

Love it. Puzzle is much more restricted than it seems and every step is clear once you see it.
