The Prank Crank

(Published on 30. September 2026, 01:41 by DubiousMobius)

This puzzle was created for Scojo's annual impostor event, where setters create 2 puzzles - one in their style, and one in the style of a target setter. This year I was tasked with imitating the incredible ThePedallingPianist whose works of brilliance and minimalist cluing are always an inspiration! Don't miss the puzzle he whipped up this year for the challenge.

I had a delightful time researching this puzzle, and am quite proud of what I whipped up. TPP does some great stuff with emoji in his visuals, and I may have gone a little overboard trying to figure out how to use them in the my artwork...

Hope you enjoy, and any and all feedback is appreciated.

Rules:

QUATTROQUADRI:
• Fill the left grid with the digits 1-9 so that digits don't repeat in any row, column or box.

POSITIONAL RANKS:
• Each cell in the left grid creates a 4-digit number by concatenating it with the digits in the same position in the other boxes, proceeding clockwise around the grid;
• For this number, the digit in the cell represents the thousand's digit, its clockwise counterpart represents the hundreds digit, and so on;
• These 36 numbers are ranked 1-36 from lowest to highest;
• Clues in the right grid relate to the ranks of the corresponding cells in the left grid.

LOCAL CLUES:
• Cells separated by a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio;
• Cells separated by a white dot are consecutive;
• The cell with a grey square is even.

N.B. If two ranks are tied, the value in both cells in the right grid is the lower of the two ranks being shared. For example, if the lowest four ranks are '1358', '1632', '1632' and '1843', the values in the relevant rank cells would be (1), (2), (2) and (4) respectively.
