Yin Yang Yogn

(Published on 17. September 2026, 18:45 by marty_sears)

This was my puzzle for week 1 of Scojo's 'Impostor Challenge', designed to be quintessentially, unmistakably me. I even put my name on it in case there was any room for doubt. I'm happy to report that I won my pairing, but not without a fantastic effort from Lake with this Marty style isofill.

If you're interested, here's my week 2 puzzle where I impersonated Juggler.

Rules:

Normal sudoku rules apply.

YIN YANG YONG: Divide the grid into three regions of orthogonally connected cells. No 2x2 area can be entirely within one region.

TWO TRUTHFUL REGIONS AND A LIAR REGION: Clues always sit entirely within one region. For two of the regions, all of its clues tell the truth, obeying the rules listed below. However, the 3rd region is a liar region. All of the clues in the liar region break their rule.

CLUE TYPES:

• If a V sits between two digits, they sum to 5.
• If a BLACK DOT sits between two digits, one is double the other.
• If a WHITE DOT sits between two digits, they are consecutive.
• If a YELLOW SQUARE sits between two digits, they are not consecutive.
• If a GREEN DIAMOND sits between two digits, they have a difference of at least 5.
• If a RED DOT sits between two digits, one is odd and the other is even.
• A digit in a CIRCLE indicates the sum of all the digits seen in the direction of its arrow that are in the same region as the circle, until the first region border is reached.

Solution code: Digits in the lying region in column 5, reading downwards

Conditional wrogn logic is up there with my favorite sudoku concepts and this was executed in a very fun way.

I had to quit and restart it later, 3 Stars is crazy lol. Very cool rules and break-in.

Brilliant puzzle, but very hard for me. Almost 4 hours. Ok, first 30 minutes I looked perplexed at the empty grid because I misread the rules (summing and counting are different). After correcting my „error“, it flowed well until mid/end-solve. I overlooked something easy and that made the logic at the end harder than it it is anyways. Brilliant setting, Marty. Who else could have set this. Thanks!

Great ending!

I had a real chuckle when I realized (very belatedly!) what the yellow square means inside of the Yogn region.

And the last 20% is truly a marvel -- the order in which the ambiguities unravel is really something. In particular, there are a lot of "slightly wrong" solutions that are very similar to each other, trapping naughty bifurcators such as myself.

This might be the most beautiful "endgame" I've ever seen in a sudoku.

Overall, this puzzle is so delightfully witty, there's no chance this isn't 100% pure "Made In Marty's Brain".
(It's only a Sudoku if it's made in the mad area of Marty Sears' brain, otherwise it's just a Sparkling Brain Teaser)

Unfortunately poor Lake didn’t stand a chance against this.

Some of the clues in this puzzle were just absolutely brilliant and I have no idea how one even begins to set them. I especially loved the two yellow dots in column 1.

Whew!
Beautiful puzzle! Very Martyesque, I'm sure nobody would be fooled.
It started out easier than I expected, but when I had almost finished the YYY, things came to a screeching halt for me. Slowely but surely I got there, though. Took me 145 minutes.
A high 4 stars for me.

Marty: woo! well done, thanks for persisting with it

Damn, I was on the wrong version AND offline. After having found 3 different valid solutions, I decided to have a look online and found out about the fix. Superb puzzle nonetheless !

Quite a fun and clever puzzle! I have to admit it was a bit daunting to even start with YYY, but eventually some initial observations pushed me to solve it. Thank you for this puzzle (which is definitely yours!)

Ha ha ha, I guess I was working on the wrogn version of the puzzle. Until sudokupad reloaded and the good one appeared. Fun puzzle! Thanks :)

Have made a fix to the puzzle (I forgot to include a clue in the version I published to LMD. Whoopsy! apologies for any frustration caused)

This could very well be my favourite Marty puzzle (but then, I do have a softspot for shenanigans). One of the most approachable liar puzzles I've seen, too, with just that right balance of difficulty.
