My Pent Opia
(Published on 15. September 2026, 20:38 by Nell Gwyn)
This is the puzzle I set for Turn 4 of the Skunkworks League, Season 2.
- Each clued cell is both a Pentopia and a Myopia clue.
- Myopia: Draw a single closed loop along the edges of cells. The loop does not branch or cross itself. Arrows point towards the loop segment(s) that cross that cell's row and/or column nearest to the clue (if a clue has multiple arrowheads, the distance to the nearest loop segment must be the same in each indicated direction).
- Pentopia: Shade some cells gray such that each connected block of shaded cells is a pentomino (meaning it contains exactly 5 cells), pentominoes do not touch each other (even diagonally), and no two pentominoes in the grid are the same shape (including by rotation or reflection). Arrows are always unshaded, and point towards the shaded cell(s) nearest to the clue in that cell's row and/or column (if a clue has multiple arrowheads, the distance to the nearest shaded cell must be the same in each indicated direction).
- Interaction: A pentomino cannot cross the Myopia loop (in other words, each pentomino is either fully inside or fully outside the loop)
- All possible clues are given (meaning, any cell that would have the exact same arrow(s) as both a Pentopia clue and a Myopia clue will always be clued).
Solution code: For each row from top to bottom, give the number of unshaded cells that are inside the loop in that row (e.g. 4012063302).
