Fortress Fillomino - Nabner (9x9)

(Published on 11. September 2026, 16:45 by marty_sears)

An absolute pleasure to create this episode for ThePedallingPianist's epic series: Fortress Fillomino Fridays.

FORTRESS FILLOMINO:
• Divide the grid into orthogonally connected regions and fill each cell with a number (not necessarily single-digit) showing the number of cells in the region to which it belongs;
• Each region must be either strictly larger than all of its orthogonal neighbours or strictly smaller than all of its orthogonal neighbours.

NABNERS: No two numbers anywhere on a yellow line may be the same or consecutive.

Solution code: Row 9 from left to right

Definetly not 2 stars for me. Took me over 2 hours. But it was fun. It became easier after I realised the „trick“ that comes with this ruleset. Thanks Marty.

Managed to place a 1 in 10 minutes. I usually fly through 2 star puzzles - either this isn't a 2 star or I'm missing something very fundamental.

Marty: if it's your first fortress fillomino, there's one very important realisation to be had about how that ruleset works, and after that everything becomes a lot easier, as will any fortress fillomino puzzles you do in the future

zee_super_beeg:
Ahhh... once the implication finally clicked it was very smooth and enjoyable. Thanks!

2 stars? Maybe if you're an experienced Fortress Fillomino solver...
I'm new to Fortress Fillomino, so I got nowhere initially. After looking into it, watching TPP's video and solving the first two in the series, I gave it another shot. I got a bit further, but still got stuck for a while until something clicked and after that it was relatively smooth sailing.
4 stars for me.

Lovely puzzle! To anyone having trouble getting a grip on the Fortress Fillomino series, I highly recommend ThePedallingPianist's youtube video which teaches the key ideas. (The "Message in a Bottle" video.)

Thank you very much for creating and sharing this absolutely fantastic FFF-puzzle. Perfect setting, as usual.

Beautiful construction. I especially liked the surprising ending where I was sure I broke the puzzle (a feeling I often get when solving Marty’s puzzles) until I realized how the last couple of regions work.

Thank you for this lovely contribution to the series! Some really fun and smooth deductions throughout, and I especially enjoyed the clue in the bottom left ;)

Having done only a few Fillomino puzzles in the past, it took me a while to get the hang of the rules. After that the puzzle was super smooth and really a joy to solve! Thank you Marty for yet another masterpiece!

Maybe I should have started with some others from the series - just figuring out the implications of the fortress fillomino (say that 10 times fast!) took me far longer than it should have done. But once that clicked, the rest was beautiful.

PS. Thank you for highlighting the series - I've just done the first two. A lot of fun!

As a first timer in Fortress Fillominos, it looked basically impossible to even get the second digit; so figuring out what's going on with the constraint and solving the puzzle is really satisfying! What an amazing puzzle (and constraint)! :D

Very friendly construction

@Tortugo

Different constructors have taken different approaches to that.

One of the most common approaches is that if the region size is a two digit number you only enter the digit from the ones position in sudokupad. But you enter both digits if it's part of the solution code.

I haven’t started yet but how would I enter a 2 digit number? Sorry if this is obvious but I’ve never done it and can’t find it in Sven’s settings or in previous fortress fillomino puzzle comments.

I have been looking forward to see what you could make of this rule set.

These rules work nicely together. I found the difficulty of this one to be at the high end of one star puzzles.
