(Published on 8. September 2026, 12:00 by 72kchunshuai)

This is part 2 of my Hidden German Whisper series.

Part 1: Warm Up

Part 2: Follow Up

Part 3: Sum Up

Part 4: Trinity

Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1–9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • V: Digits along a 'V' sum to five. Not all possible Vs are given.
  • Renban: Digits on a purple line form a non-repeating set of consecutive digits, in any order.
  • Hidden German Whisper: Hidden beneath each Renban is at least one German Whisper line. Each German Whisper line is at least two cells long, and lies entirely beneath the Renban. Adjacent digits along a German Whisper line must differ by at least 5.

This was a fun gimmick. It was a bit confusing what "beneath" meant in this context. At first I thought "beneath" meant in the grid as it's presented in 2d and thought the rule was very ambiguous. Looking at the other puzzles in this series and seeing a thermo in row 9 made that impossible. Then I realized beneath meant as in layers in photoshop. I think adding the word "overlapping" somehow would make it more clear for people who misunderstand the puzzle like me.

This looks a lot like "slats" from Florian Wortmann.

Thanks! I just solved “slats” after your comment — really enjoyed it. I can see the similarity, but I came up with this pattern independently while working on the series, so it’s a fun coincidence.
