Sleeping Chameleons

(Published on 7. July 2026, 20:30 by Al Fresco)

This puzzle was inspired by the Pi Guys The mystery of the three chameleons and after some googling I believe RockyRoer invented this genre. So a big thank you both.

Normal Sudoku rules apply. Three of the digits are chameleons. The row chameleon takes its value from its row number. The box chameleon takes its value from its box number. The column chameleon takes its value from its column number. The remaining six digits are taken at face value.

The blue square contains a square number. Adjacent values along a green German whisper vary by 5 or more. A pink renban contains a set of consecutive values in any order. Values along a grey palindrome read the same forwards and backwards.

Finally, the three chameleon digits never appear in descending order within a row, reading left to right.

Estimated difficulty 4.5 stars.

Note. For those unfamiliar, the boxes are numbered in reading order. I.e. the top right box is box 3. Also in the Sudokupad settings you can turn on the row and column labels.

Difficult puzzle, but utterly fulfilling to find the solution. I did need to do some work to find the original puzzle to fully get the rules. This was my fault, not you.
