Nightshade

(Published on 29. June 2026, 00:18 by Lithium-Ion)

This puzzle is a combination of the anti-knight constraint with yin and yang. Feedback is always greatly appreciated! The rules are as follows:

Normal Sudoku rules apply. Cells that are a knights move apart are not allowed to contain identical digits. Shade some cells in the grid such that no 2x2 region is fully shaded or fully unshaded. All shaded cells form one orthogonally connected region and all unshaded cells form one orthogonally connected region. A cell with an arrow equals the number of shaded cells in the indicated direction (excluding the cell itself), where unshaded cells do NOT block vision.

You can play this puzzle via the following link: https://sudokupad.app/u1zic2rp7x

Solution code: The digits in row 1, read from left to right.

It is an honor to get a recommendation from James Sinclair, so thank you very much! This made my day.

you might expect a yy puzzle to be level 3 as a matter of course.
turns out that this is really 2 separate puzzles.
the yy part is very easy, as such puzzles go, due to the specific counting clues.
then the anti-knight puzzle is quite easy, because you will have lots of "givens"

Beautiful puzzle! Almost got stuck initially because I forgot that this is an anti-knight puzzle, but once I realised that it was a very easy and smooth solve, 1* for me personally.

Very impressed by the way the arrows interact. Very well set.

Very fun puzzle.

I did get on a wrong path by the rule "where unshaded cells do NOT block vision".

I read it as where they don't block the sightline, they can be disregarded, but where they do block the sight they are restricting the sightline.

It took me a while because I misread the rules, turns out the arrow always count shaded cells hehe.
Was super smooth after I adjusted. 1* if you are somewhat familiar with ying yang.

It took me a full 52 minutes, but I never felt like it was hopeless. Slow and steady, with a good flow for me. Nicely constructed, thank you.
