And One Omino

(Published on 29. June 2026, 18:18 by panthchesh)

Normal Sudoku rules apply.
Normal Japanese Sum rules apply. Colors used in this puzzle are blue (b), red (r), and black (k).
The squares outside the grid indicate the order of runs of contiguous cells found in that row or column that must be shaded the color of the clue. The number in the clue, if given, indicates the sum of the cells in the run. If the square is blank, the sum for the run is unknown. There must be at least one unshaded cell between runs of the same color, though there is no need between runs of differing colors. All runs are given. ? indicate that the sum is between 1 and 9, and ?? means the sum is 10 or more.
In the grid are hidden one of each basic pentomino, one of each basic tetromino, and one omino. When a shape is placed, no other version of that shape will appear (reflections and rotations of that shape will not occur!) The shapes are either shaded red, black, blue, or unshaded! Shapes of the same shading cannot touch each other orthogonally. (This includes unshaded -- unshaded ominos may not touch each other orthogonally.) The shaded ominos will each connect to a number in the grid which will give the sum of the digits in that omino. Digits are not allowed to repeat in an omino.

Pretty cool and fun puzzle overall! Took me longer than expected because I didn’t hit the right spots immediately in the first half but after that, it was a rather smooth and comforting solve.

Fantastic! I love how the different rules interact and flow together to uncover the shapes.

"In the grid are hidden one of each basic pentomino, one of each basic tetromino, and one omino."

I think it would've helped if the last word was 'monomino' to differentiate it from the more broad 'shaded -ominos' later in the rules. Sometimes a reference image is given of all the basic penta/tetro shapes which is nice too.

Fun puzzle! I was worried I would break it and have to retry multiple times. But it flowed easily and I managed to finish it on the first try :)
