Sudoku Variants Series (472) - Magic Japanese summer

(Published on 19. June 2026, 06:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a unique Sudoku variant every week.
I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Magic Japanese summer
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Shade some cells, such that shaded cells don't touch each other horizontally or vertically.
All digits in connected unshaded cells form (multi digit) numbers, reading from left to right or top to bottom. Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of all numbers in the corresponding row or column.
For example: a row with digits 123456789 with 4 and 6 in shaded cells would have a clue of 123 + 5 + 789 = 917.

Inspiration for this type comes (more or less) from me.

Loved it! This was a totally new dynamic to me and I also stared at it for a while at first with no idea how to begin, but it dawned on me piece by piece in a really satisfying way.
