Four Slow Thermos

(Published on 29. May 2026, 01:49 by mellowrobinson)

Normal Chaos Construction rules apply:

  • Divide the grid into nine regions of nine orthogonally connected cells, and fill every cell with a digit from 1-9 so there aren't repeats in a row, column, or region.

Slow Thermometers:
  • Along a gray line, digits must not decrease moving away from the bulb end.
  • Additionally, two cells connected orthogonally by a thermometer line must be in the same region. Diagonal connections have no additional restriction.

If I understand correctly, slowness on a thermometer can only have effect when the thermometer has a kink. Four of the thermometers are kinked and, so, potentially really slow. I can't say how many of those actually have repeated digits without perpetrating a spoiler.

really fantastic. Enjoyed it a lot. Nothing makes me feel smarter than solving a chaos construction

natural solve path, with just the right amount of difficulty: each step felt incredibly logical and smooth!

Various approaches needed through the puzzle, none of them very hard.

A couple of times I did need several minutes to spot the right question to ask. But once I found it, it was obvious.

Overall a great puzzle.

I gave extra points for using the coloring in the solution code, and for guessing my social security number ;)

Fine approachable puzzle - looks more complicated than it is. Seems to me like a really good introduction to region building ideas - like regions needing to reach specific digits and irregular Sudoku patterns. Had a nice flow with plenty to think about, but no really hard steps. A really cool puzzle which I hope will help some newer solvers to learn new tricks.

Oh cool! Some really interesting parts to the break-in, and that one big slow thermo was fun to portion out.

Fantastic puzzle! Always love an approachable chaos construction, especially one like this where it's not too hard but you still have to think about the regions, which is always hard to balance. Great job!
