Killers in Hiding (hidden sum killer sudoku)

(Published on 12. May 2026, 09:51 by Aspartagcus)

I'm not sure why I have not tried setting a puzzle like this before, as it combines two of my favorite aspects of variant sudoku: embedded clues in a rotationally symmetric grid.
This took me a few hours to set, and I'm really happy with the outcome. Hope you enjoy solving it!
Not sure if this should be a 3/5 or a 4/5. Let me know.

This puzzle has been featured on CtC!

RULES:
Sudoku: Fill each row, column and region with the digits 1-9.
Hidden sum killer cages: Digits in a cage may not repeat and sum to the two-digit number in the two left-most cells in the top row of that cage.

And this is the puzzle:

Enjoy!

I love how the symmetry is broken by the rules and not by anything visible on the grid!

Very fun! Since I'd done your 6x6 puzzle first this was a 3* for me (well, once I remembered that this one didn't allow digits in a cage to repeat) but if I hadn't already figured out some of the tricks to how these cages work on that easier one, I suspect I would have struggled a lot more to break in. I'd love to see more of this ruleset!

Amazing that it's enough to define the entire grid. Very cool. Thanks!

I got lucky at the end of the solve, but I don't see a way to see the resolution for the last two cages.

Great puzzle! I gave it 4 stars, because of a logical oversight by me, that took me ages to find and left me at a brick wall, so actually it might be 3 stars if I had payed more attention. Thanks for the beautiful puzzle.
