Fret Board

(Published on 11. May 2026, 00:23 by laquartetfan)

I was inspired by Marty Sears' excellent puzzle Something Stupid to create a shuffled somedoku without any indication in the grid which cells index the number of digits allowed in a row or column.

Rules:

SHUFFLED SOMEDOKU: Fill the 9x9 grid with the digits 1-9. Each row and column contains exactly one index cell, and each index cell contains a different digit. If an index cell contains the digit N, then the row containing the index cell contains N distinct digits, repeating digits as necessary; and the column containing the index cell contains N distinct digits, repeating digits as necessary. An index cell's row and column needn't contain that same set of N digits. E.g. if R4C5 is an index cell containing the digit 3, row 4 could be: 223636362; and column 5 could be: 738388888.

BLACK DOTS: Digits in cells joined by a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio.

GERMAN WHISPERS: Adjacent digits along a green line have a difference of at least 5.

ENTROPIC LINES: Any set of three adjacent digits on a peach line must contain a low digit (123), a medium digit (456), and a high digit (789). [If an entropic line has only two digits, they cannot both be low, medium, or high digits.]

MODULAR LINES: Any set of three adjacent digits along a teal line has three different remainders when divided by 3; that is, a remainder-0 digit (369), a remainder-1 digit (147), and a remainder-2 digit (258). [If a modular line has only two digits, they cannot both be remainder-0, remainder-1, or remainder-2 digits.]

Space outside the 9x9 grid can be used for notes. Note that solution checking may not work if digits are placed outside of the 9x9 grid.

Play the puzzle on SudokuPad.

Solution code: Row 4 (9 digits)

Incredibly underrated puzzle! I love somedoku and this was such a fun follow up to Marty Sears' shuffling concept.

How does row five column seven of the inner grid resolve? ive done the entire puzzle including indexers but that single cell seems to still be ambiguous to me. not that the solution code requires it however. perhaps you could fix it by having it under a fog cell till the end or something, that would seem like the quickest/least difficult way

laquartetfan: Thanks so much for catching that! I added in a two-cell entropic line to resolve the digit.
