TSL2 Turn 2

(Published on 9. May 2026, 18:39 by phil_the)

This was my entry for turn 2 of The Skunkworks League setting competition. The requirement was to make a puzzle using two separate grids, one of which has no numbers in the solution.
Solve in Penpa+

Heyawake grid:

Shade some cells such that no two shaded cells are orthogonally adjacent and all of the unshaded cells form a single orthogonally connected region. No horizontal or vertical run of unshaded cells may pass through more than two regions.

Sudoku grid:

Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column and 3x3 box. Digits in cells separated by a white dot are consecutive.

In cells separated by a black dot, one digit is double the other.

A digit N in a cell with two arrows points to two cells N steps away in the indicated directions. The digits in these cells, X and Y, indicate that the region in the heyawake grid containing the cell in row X and column Y and also the region containing the cell in row Y and column X, both contain exactly N shaded cells.

For example if R4C4 in the sudoku grid contains a 5, R9C4 contains a 2 and R4C9 contains a 4 then in the heyawake grid R2C4 and R4C2 would both be part of a region containing 5 shaded cells. These may be the same or two different regions.

Solution code: Digits in row 9 of the sudoku grid
