Cave / Forest Walk Permaculture

(Published on 2. May 2026, 09:00 by Agent)

Rules

  • Permaculture: Divide the grid into two regions of orthogonally connected cells. One region is a Cave, the other is a Forest Walk.

  • Cave Region:
    • Shade some cells in the Cave region.
    • Within the boundaries of the Cave region, all unshaded cells must form one orthogonally connected area.
    • Within the boundaries of the Cave region, all shaded cells must be connected orthogonally by other shaded cells to an edge of the Cave region (or the edge of the grid).
    • Clues in the Cave region must be unshaded, and represent the total number of unshaded cells that can be seen in a straight line vertically or horizontally, including itself. Shaded cells and region borders block vision.

  • Forest Walk Region:
    • Shade some cells in the Forest Walk region.
    • Draw a single connected loop network that travels orthogonally through the centers of all cells in the Forest Walk region. The loop network may not enter the Cave region.
    • All unshaded cells in the Forest Walk region must contain a branch (T-junction).
    • All shaded cells in the Forest Walk region must contain either a corner or a straight line.
    • Clues in the Forest Walk region must be shaded, and indicate how many cells make up the continuous shaded section of the loop network that the clue is on.

  • Global Cave Constraint:
    • In the entire grid, all shaded cells of the Cave and Forest Walk regions combined must form one orthogonally connected area.
    • In the entire grid, all unshaded cells of both regions combined must be connected orthogonally by other unshaded cells to an edge of the grid.

  • Cipher: Each letter represents a different digit from 1 to 9. A question mark may represent any digit, but for two-digit numbers, the first digit may not be 0.

Example Solution

Main Puzzle

This time I missed solving the example puzzle first- maybe this would have kept me from asking for help for the break-in (which wasn't so hard as I made it). The rest was a beautiful and enjoyable solve as always!

I said in jest that this puzzle was a disappointment, but only because expectations of Agent puzzles have become absurdly high. Absolutely outstanding nevertheless.

Future solvers: don't be like me and forget to read that cipher digits are 1-9 only.

Amazing puzzle! It sometimes took a while to spot the right idea, but there were many cool steps throughout the solve. Figuring out the cipher was particularly neat!
