Ascending Sums (with SennyK)

(Published on 15. April 2026, 13:36 by sujoyku)

SennyK‘s “German Sums“ constraint made me think of giving the sum of the longest (increasing) thermo starting from the resp. edge of the grid. In our collab puzzle, we have called these clues “Ascending Sums“. A quick research has shown that it is also known as “Ascending Starters“ and has been used by great setters like Richard and Clover.
We like to thank all testers and wish you joyful solving!

Rules:

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Ascending Sums (aka Ascending Starters): A clue outside the grid gives the sum of all continuously adjacent increasing digits up to (and not including) the first digit that decreases in that row or column from the direction of the clue.

Example: The row 456123789 would have an Ascending Sum clue of 15 (=4+5+6) on the left and a clue of 9 on the right.
