Starcell s2

(Published on 22. March 2026, 04:59 by pz01)

Since I first introduced "Starcell", I’ve received a lot of valuable feedback from various puzzle communities. Thank you to everyone who took the time to test it!

One common piece of feedback was that allowing duplicate numbers in certain rows or columns (due to the grid shape) felt unintuitive and added unnecessary mental fatigue. To address this and create a cleaner logical flow, I have updated the rules to a more "Global" constraint system.

[Updated Rules]
Place the digits 1-9 exactly once in each of the following regions. All lines now follow the "Non-duplication" rule regardless of their length or continuity:

  • All Horizontal and Vertical Lines: Every row and column must contain digits 1-9 only once, whether the cells are contiguous ("⬛⬜⬜⬜⬛") or separated by gaps ("⬜⬜⬛⬜⬜").
  • The Two Main Diagonals: Standard 1-9 constraint applies.
  • 9 Overlapping 3x3 Boxes.
  • The Special "Center" Region: Composed of the nine exact central cells of each 3x3 box.

I would love to hear how this "New Generation" of Starcell feels compared to the previous version. Does the logic flow more smoothly now? Please let me know your thoughts!

Without the extra difficulty of possible repeats on row/column 1379, it definitely feels more like filling in a classic sudoku and the star cell concept loses a great part of its charm. Thanks anyway for the nice puzzle.
