Day and Night

(Published on 10. March 2026, 19:57 by balpha)

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

During the day, the herd spreads out to find food: Inside a box with a sun, no two even digits are orthogonally adjacent.

During the night, the herd cuddles together: Inside a box with a moon, the even digits form an orthogonally connected region.

The celestial bodies are always odd, with a sun 5 or higher and a moon 5 or lower.

An even digit has a difference of at least 5 with any orthogonally adjacent sun or moon (regardless of whether they share a box).

Thank you very much for creating and sharing this lovely puzzle. So even sheep found their way into a Sudoku ground.

[balpha:] Interesting that you're thinking of sheep! I couldn't say what animal exactly I was thinking of, but it wasn't sheep. More like something in the desert. But I guess either could work :D Thank you for the kind comment!

My kind of puzzle, rules were new to me and for me easy to follow and complete.

Cell relationships without lines everywhere was fun.

[balpha:] Happy to hear you enjoyed it, thanks for the praise!

I was stuck for a long time until I realized that I had missed the last rule. After that it flowed nicely, very nice puzzle. Thank you

[balpha:] Indeed, that rule is quite vital :D I appreciate the feedback, thank you!

I enjoyed that a great deal, thanks. The rules played off each other nicely, some deductions caught me by surprise.

It is easy to err when deducing polarity of a cell, which can throw off the entire board, so I’m grateful for the ability to periodically run an error check to make sure I haven’t gone off the rails.

[balpha:] Happy to hear you liked it, and I appreciate the feedback!
