Just Across the Lane

(Published on 9. March 2026, 17:07 by DubiousMobius)

I recently released this puzzle, and was asked very reasonably if I could recommend a warm-up puzzle. So here's a 6x6 introduction to Janus Arrows that I hope will be fun and instructive. Big thanks to earthpuzzles for the suggestion and the test, and to dzamie for catching an error in the initial release!

Rules:

Sudoku: Place the digits 1-6 once each in every row, column, and box.

Janus Arrows: A double arrow clue looks out in both directions from its edge. Larger cells block its vision of smaller cells, so it only sees a cell if that cell is larger than every other cell between itself and the arrow. Double-arrow clues will see twice as many cells in one direction as they will in the other.

The clue in the below example is valid because it sees twice as many cells in one direction as the other. Cells seen by the clue are shaded green and unseen cells are shaded grey.

Wow, definitelly not a 2* for me, but what a wonderful puzzle. I am a bit scared of trying a 9x9, but I wouldn't be myself if I didn't :D

Small typo in the instructions, I guess it should be 1-6 instead of 1-9. And a small visual example of the Janus arrow would be very helpful.

I think I've got it after reading it a few times but it was a bit hard to get a grasp on it. A non-native speaker might struggle.

----

DM: Thanks for the typo catch! I've added an example to the instructions as well. :)

Jasper: Perfect! Really clear example! Gonna have a crack at the big one now.
