Eat Your Cake

(Published on 3. March 2026, 18:43 by Chilly)

This is a puzzle I made for a Sudoku competition a few years back. It's super-easy, but I hope it's still fun.

The Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Battenburg: the four cells surrounding a small Battenburg cake slice must contain 2 odd and 2 even digits - the even digits and odd digits around the small square must not be orthogonally adjacent to each other.

I was a little doubtful at first glance that it would anything more than just basic sudoku, but the colouring was very fun! lovely stuff :D

Very tasty.

For avoidance of doubt for other solvers, batterburg sometimes has a negative constraint (all battenburgs are given). That is not the case in this puzzle, 2 odds and 2 evens can appear in a checkerboard pattern without a battenburg being present.

Yes - that was a common feature of Battenburg puzzles - but I feel that negative constraints work better in more tricky puzzles.

Took me a few minutes to grok that this was a colouring puzzle. Liked the back and forth between colouring and sudoku. So many colouring puzzles are do all the colours first, then solve for the cells.
