Each small grey 4x4 grid is a "mean mini": select 4 unique digits from 1-8 and place them once each in every row, column, and 2x2 box. The set of 4 digits must be different for every 4x4 grid.

Each 2x2 is a cell of the giant 8x8 Sudoku, and its value is the sum of its blue shape. The giant 8x8 Sudoku uses 8 unique values (to be determined), which occur once each in every giant row, column, and 2x4 box.

Digits connected by an "=" are the same.

whew, that was a wild ride!! What a fun puzzle! Assigning a difficulty rating for this is tricky, because none of the deductions are more than 3* (it was really surprising how the puzzle sort of solved itself, using me as a conduit), but the puzzle is so huge and long that it took me more than three hours anyway! It's a 5* duration with 3* deductions: I'll split the difference and make it 4* :).

This is exquisite, maybe not as hard as it first looks, it flows very well when you work out how to approach it

It is brutal since you need to keep track of all of the permutation, but other wise very solvable and intriguing puzzle!
