Quiet Cages

(Published on 31. January 2026, 10:00 by FIT7Y)

Rules:

Place the digits 1-9 once each into every row, column, and box.

The grid is covered in fog. Correctly placed digits will clear fog from the surrounding (up to eight) cells. No guessing is required.

Whisper Cages:
Digits in a cage sum to the total given in the leftmost cell in the topmost row of that cage; every cage has a given total. Digits in a cage do not repeat. Orthogonally adjacent cells within the same cage differ by at least 5.

Revised the Whisper Cage rules to state that all totals are given

on 1. February 2026, 20:31 by sparkymanu
I would say that the text in "Whisper Cages" imply that the clues are given by explaining the emplacement (at least that is how I interpreted it), but I guess a precision couldn't hurt.

Usually it says "when given" in the description when cages can have no sum

Anyway, nice puzzle, I would say 1* for the difficulty but clearly deserves better rating :(

i'm pretty sure that this cannot be solved without ASSUMING that "all cage clues are given". (used once)
if so, then your rules need to state it explicitly, because it is NOT the convention for this site.

Why is this only 88% as I write this note? I very much enjoyed it! It may be on the easier end of the spectrum but it requires some paying attention and thinking things through in a way that made my morning solve very enjoyable.
