Whispering Chaos

(Published on 1. February 2026, 12:00 by 72kchunshuai)

I try to make a classic chaos construction puzzle, and here it is. The difficulty may be around 3.5*. Hope you like it!

Rules:

  • Sudoku: Place the digits 1-9 once each into every row, column, and region.
  • Chaos Construction: Divide the grid into 9 regions, each containing 9 orthogonally connected cells. Some region borders are already drawn.
  • Arrows: The digit in a cell containing an arrow indicates how many consecutive cells in the arrow’s direction — starting from the next cell — belong to the same region as the arrow cell. This count stops at the first region border seen and does not include the arrow cell itself. Not all possible arrows are given.
  • German Whispers: Adjacent digits along a green line must differ by at least 5.

Example:

In this example puzzle, adjacent digits along a German Whisper line must differ by at least 3. Try example puzzle

Solution code: Digits in row 6 from left to right with (-) in between for region borders

That was hard work. Really tested my CC skills. I went through the same journey to discover the key mid game deduction. The solution code is like a bow on the top.

4* is correct based on my ~2.5 HR solve time. Thanks!

Somehow the difficulty felt more like two stars to me.

I liked how the arrows interacted in the beginning. Though early on I did forget to draw the boundary when I learned one of the numbers on an arrow. That surely slowed me down later when I mistakenly thought that region might grow further.

Thanks for the solve and feedback! If it felt like 2*, that's high praise for your solving abilities. Hope you still had a great time with the puzzle!
