Sudoku: Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Compass:

  • The digits 1 through 8 represent directions, starting at 1 and going clockwise around the compass. For example, if 1 were south-east, then 2 would be south, 3 south-west and so on round to 8 being east.
  • You must determine which direction is represented by 1. The same compass applies to every clue in the puzzle.

Paths and Steps:

  • Characters in this puzzle (agents, rover balloons and The Prisoner) take paths consisting of steps. Each step after the first on a path, if there is one, starts from the cell on which the previous step ended.
  • When a character takes a step, they must move one cell in the direction indicated by the digit in the cell from which the step starts. The digit at the end of the step is not restricted (and may even be 9 if the path does not continue).
  • No path may visit a cell more than once, visit a cell anywhere on any other character's path, cross itself or cross any other character's path.

Characters:

  • Squares are agents, who each follow a path starting from their square and consisting of a total number of steps equal to the digit in their starting square.
  • Grey circles are rover balloons, which separate two cells. Each rover balloon must follow a one-step-long path which leads from one of the cells on its dot (you must determine which) to the other.
  • The red diamond, who has been assigned Number Six to start with, is The Prisoner, who must follow steps along a path which is as long as necessary to escape, leaving the grid vertically through the gateway at the bottom.

Interesting ruleset. Found it quite hard but then I did keep messing up number of steps Vs number os cells. Thanks!

Approachable and fun, just need to take a minute at the start to absorb the rules. You can pretty quickly find the orientation of the compass
