Smugglers' Cove

(Published on 28. December 2025, 08:47 by EdTheAlchemist)

You are a smuggler and must chart where the authorities are watching in order to land your "salvage"! When I was young I often went on holiday to the south coast of England, which was famous for its smuggling activity in the days of sailing ships - the coast was dotted with lighthouses and the smugglers would have to avoid them to land their stolen cargoes. This puzzle is a tribute to that and also, in my opinion, brutally difficult - you have been warned! I hope you enjoy it - if you do, please rate it and recommend it to your fellow solvers!

Sudoku: Normal sudoku rules apply.

Lighthouses: Circles help you find the lighthouses.

  • Each digit in a circle indicates that one of the four surrounding cells contains a lighthouse; the digit given is the digit in the lighthouse. "A" is a digit that must be deduced be the solver and is always the same; ?s represent any digit (which may or may not be the same as A and/or each other).
  • Each clue clues one lighthouse, and each lighthouse is clued exactly once.
  • A lighthouse counts the number of cells it sees in all four cardinal directions combined which are strictly less than itself (and therefore it does NOT count itself). Cells larger than the lighthouse block line of sight and are not seen by the lighthouse.
  • Any lighthouse is in the light; any cell seen by one or more lighthouses is in the light. All cells which are not in the light are in the dark.

Smugglers: Cells with arrows represent smugglers.

  • Smugglers' cells must be in the dark.
  • At least ONE of the arrows on each smuggler counts the cells seen in the dark, NOT including the smuggler themselves, in the direction of that arrow. Cells in the light block line of sight.
  • Any other arrows on each smuggler are decoys, which may or may not count the cells seen in that direction!

"Cells larger than the lighthouse block line of sight" now followed by "and are not seen by the lighthouse."

"Cells larger than the lighthouse block line of sight" doesn't clarify whether those cells are themselves seen and lighted. Intuitively, a building higher than a lighthouse would be seen and lighted by the lighthouse, while hiding any building behind it. But in this puzzle, higher buildings seem to exude some magical force field that prevent themselves from being seen and lighted.

This is a general problem when a puzzle uses a theme - around the edges, the analogies tend to break.
