14 Digesting Snakes and 1 Boulder

Place the 8-cell shape (the "boulder') into the grid, without rotating or reflecting it. Place a chain of 14 snakes such that each snake head shares exactly one edge with the next snake tail, and otherwise snakes do not share an edge with themselves or any other snake. The first and last snake do not touch at an edge.

The snake may not traverse any cells belonging to the boulder.

Each snake covers exactly 9 cells, and consists of a head end and a tail end (each of 1-4 cells), and a single 2x2 area where the snake is digesting its dinner. A snake does not branch.

The cells unoccupied by either the snakes or the boulder consist of 13 separate regions of size 1 to 13 exactly once each.

Each brown circle in the grid is either a snake’s dinner or a point at which two snakes touch at a corner. All such points are given.

Numbers cannot be on the snake, and they indicate the size of their (non-snake) region.

Solvable ExampleSolution

In the example puzzle there is no boulder to place.

And here is the puzzle (also available on Penpa* or SudokuPad).

*To trigger answer check on the penpa version of the main puzzle, shade the snakes grey or black with the Surface tool, delineate the boulder with a green Edge, and separate snakes with a green Edge also.

Solution code: Row 6 and column 12 (4th-to-last): S for snake, E for non-snake, and B for boulder cells.
