Wichtels Rätselherbst 2025 (8): Sudoku-Collage
(Published on 12. November 2025, 20:25 by wichtel)
To Christmas 2024 some eager puzzlefriends have again arranged a group in which everybody had to make anonymously a puzzle for someone else. These puzzles are now presented one after the other here in the portal.
This year Santa Claus commissioned his entire gnome team to create a Sudoku for Grana. Much to his displeasure, the quarreling gnomes misunderstood the task and each individual created a separate 6x6 Sudoku: an Arrow Sudoku, a Counting Circle Sudoku (if a circle contains a digit N, then exactly N circles contain this digit), a Skyscraper Sudoku, a Killer Sudoku, a Kropki Sudoku (without negative constraint), a Cipher Sudoku (same letters stand for same digits, different letters for different digits), a Thermo Sudoku, and an XV Sudoku (without negative constraint). And even worse - none of the eight Sudokus were uniquely solvable, some were even unsolvable.
Without further ado, Santa grabbed the eight puzzles and made a collage, in which puzzles overlap each other by 2x2 areas at the corners. Digits located on the overlaps now count for both puzzles. The overlaps also affect the clues - for each puzzle, only the clues and parts of clues that are still visible count. Everything under the overlaps can be different than in the original puzzle: For example, killer cages that are partially covered by an overlap can contain different cells under the overlap, as long as the visible border of the cage still makes sense. Similarly, Arrows or Thermos that are partially covered may extend freely under the cover as long as the visible part (including the transition into the overlap) is valid. When a killer cage's total is covered, the cage can have any total. Kropki circles that are completely under an overlap are no longer necessarily valid, but those that are only half covered are still valid. Counting Circles can be removed or added as desired under an overlap.
Unfortunately, Santa Claus can no longer remember where he placed which puzzle. However, he still remembers that they were arranged exactly as in the picture - you can even see which puzzle is on top for each overlap. Now it's up to Grana to reconstruct the collage and solve all the puzzles.
Solution code: The diagonal from top left to bottom right, followed by row 10 (36 digits total)
