Variant Sudoku 101: Killer Cages (2 puzzles)

(Published on 10. November 2025, 22:26 by PhoenixAki)

This series introduces many of the common variant sudoku rules by giving 2 puzzles that familiarize you with how they work. Occasionally, these puzzles will also use dynamic fog to help guide the solve path and keep things accessible. It is expected that you are comfortable with classic (non-variant) sudoku logic. Please keep in mind that these puzzles are specifically meant to be more approachable than usual (like adding fog when it isn't necessary) and that I hope the series doesn't get rated lower as a result.

As this is the first post in this series, I welcome feedback! I am open to splitting the puzzles into separate posts instead of a 2-in-1, and I'm also open to modifying the solution code process as well. Consider this a trial run before I continue the series.

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply: place 1-9 in each row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • Dynamic Fog: The grid is mostly covered in grey fog. Placing correct digits into cells will progressively clear away the fog, at minimum under those cells and sometimes in other parts of the grid as well. No guessing is required.
  • Killer Cages: Cells surrounded in a dotted-line cage must sum to the total given in the top left of the cage. As these are beginner puzzles, it is recommended that you enable the "killer calculator" in settings -> advanced if you are not comfortable doing mental math.
Please let me know (via comment or Discord (same username), ideally) if you solve any of my puzzles on a stream or video, I love watching! Also, I post solution videos to my puzzles on my YouTube channel. Try to solve without referring to it first :)

Solve level 1 on Sudokupad! Solve level 2 on Sudokupad!

Solution code: 6 digits total. The completion message for each puzzle in Sudokupad reveals the code.

Having a single rating for multiple independent puzzles is pretty much never a good idea, I would suggest splitting the puzzles into separate posts

Hi, this was great fun, approachable, but not too easy or trivial with a nice flow. I also like the 2-in-1 format with the solution code. Thanks for the fun! :)

Hi, I believe the idea is great, and the way it is implemented for killer cages too. These two guided puzzles are not trivial, so new players will be able to learn standard solving techniques.
