Lunch Break

(Published on 18. October 2025, 15:44 by Zibl)

Zibl wants to eat his lunch on a stone near a river. Across the other side there is a deer grazing peacefully. It's a great relaxing moment. Why not come sit next to Zibl and enjoy your lunch as well?

Rules:
1. Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place the digits 1 - 9 once each in every row, column, and box.

2. RIVER: The river works as both a Region Sum Line and a German Whisper Line. Box borders divide the blue lines into segments which all have the same sum (different lines may have different sums). Adjacent digits on the lines must differ by at least 5.

3. TREES: Orthogonally adjacent digits to a tree must differ by at least 5 compared to the digit on the tree. (For example if R6C8 is 2 then the four adjacent digits must be from 7, 8, and 9.)

4. STONES: Orthogonally adjacent digits to a stone must differ by at MOST 3 compared to the digit on the stone. (For example if R6C2 is 4 then the four adjacent digits must be from 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7.)

5. DEER: The digit on the deer is larger than all it's orthogonally adjacent digits.

All the while I was thinking: lots of 45-cells, maybe I should color those.

Yeah, that was the way to do it.

Zibl: Thanks for solving! You did indeed find the intended path. :)

Enjoyed the combination of the lines and the easy flow in the beginning. After I had exhausted all clues other than the stones, it sadly became brutally difficult for me - no idea what I might have missed … so sadly as much frustration in the end as enjoyment in the beginning.

And small correction to the rules: Where the stones are described it needs to refer to the stones instead of the trees.
----
Zibl: Thank you for solving and for letting me know about the rules! Have corrected them now.

Sorry the ending felt frustrating. There is a logical path through the end involving the 45 pairs all over the grid and where they have to go in all the boxes.

Glad I got to have some lunch with Zibl. Now I guess I better get back to helping him fix those whiteboards.

Zibl: Thank you for solving and good luck! Those whiteboards are rough. :)
